Continuity Evasion

Continuity in Science

Continuity equations describe the transport of some quantity.wikipedia Applied to a quantity that is conserved, continuity equations state that the quantity can only move in a continuous flow.

Spellcasting

Every creature with a dexterity score can transport an object from one place to another. However, the continuity of the transport can be avoided, making the transportion possible to do from afar. A creature can transport an object from one place to another and back to establish a path, then store that path within their muscle memory and precision to later move it from afar. Each stored path makes a creature more clumsy and stiff.

A creature can store paths without measurable impact a number of times equal to half their HD + their Dexterity modifier (minimum one). A creature can continue storing paths after this point if they pass a Dexterity check (DC 10 + 2 per extra path). If the check fails, they take 2 Dexterity damage. If the check succeeds, they can store another path but it becomes progressively more impactful on their finesse according to the following table. Detriments to finesse from extra paths cannot be circumvented.

An unconscious creature maintains their stored paths. A revived creature regains their stored paths.

Extra paths Finesse detriment
1 Penalties as if grappled except for movement, using two hands, and making attacks of opportunities
2 Penalties as if pinned except for movement, using two hands, and making attacks of opportunities
3 Paralyzed
4 or more One negative level for each extra path over 3. These negative levels cannot be healed but go away when the path is released

Basis and Examples

When you form a path, you are storing two surfaces and the quantity that can be transported through them.

Anything that can reasonably be considered the same will be considered the same. For example, all of your blood is considered the same even if the molecules are different after 120 days (lifespan of a red blood cell); water from a river is considered the same as all water in that river; light from a flame is considered the same as all the light from that flame. Items in crates do not count as the crate.

Examples

Teleporting

Creation: You go to a location
Surface: physical surface of you
Fixed Start Position: Yes
Fixed End Position: Yes
Quantity Transported: matter
Advanced?: No
Note: this would only teleport what you had on you at the time of going to the end location. This is where the blood thing comes up, cuz otherwise when you teleport, you'd die of blood loss (and probably other problems) since after some time, your cells would be made of different molecules than the ones originally moved and would not get teleported otherwise.

Fixed End Position: No

Teleporting

Creation: You go to a location
Surface: physical surface of you
Fixed Start Position: Yes
Fixed End Position: Yes
Quantity Transported: all
Advanced?: Yes
Note: this includes whatever you're carrying (that can reasonably be considered "you"), like new items, new tatoos, etc.

Portals

Creation: move an object (preferably a large flat surface like a door) from one location to another
Surface: physical surface of object
Fixed Start Position: Yes
Fixed End Position: Yes
Quantity Transported: all
Advanced?: Yes

Flame-less Candle

Creation: light a candle with a fireplace and move it to another location
Surface: spherical surface around a candle flame
Fixed Start Position: Yes
Fixed End Position: Yes
Quantity Transported: photons
Advanced?: No

River Water Battering Ram

Creation: somehow move a volume of water that encompasses a cross-section of water to a gate
Surface: surface of the volume of water from river (the water can disperse after establishing the path)
Fixed Start Position: Yes
Fixed End Position: Yes
Quantity Transported: matter
Advanced?: No
Note: this would only let you batter one specific thing

River Water Battering Ram

Creation: somehow move a volume of water that encompasses a cross-section of water to a gate
Surface: surface of the volume of water from river (the water can disperse after establishing the path)
Fixed Start Position: Yes
Fixed End Position: No
Quantity Transported: matter + momentum
Advanced?: Yes

Momentum Battering Ram (river powered)

Creation: let an object (preferabbly a disc of some sort) be pushed by a river
Surface: surface of object
Fixed Start Position: Yes
Fixed End Position: No
Quantity Transported: momentum
Advanced? Yes
